A Place to Tie Flies

After extensively searching Google and wading though multiple fly fishing message board forums, I came to the conclusion that a fly-fisherman's fly tying station is to each his own-- that there is no one perfect solution or design. While portable fly-tying kits and benches are practical, I wanted to design a stationary desk. Another thing I have kept in mind is that the piece of furniture I will be constructing will sit in a room, and not tucked up in a closet or garage, so it needs to be aesthetically pleasing.

There are fly fishermen who have built desks or refurbished old secretary or rolltop desks (which is a great idea and I almost thought about doing). Unfortunately there are little to no plans available online.

I will be designing and building a desk, while recording my progress and thoughts. Inspiration for the design comes from the fly tying desk that Orvis and many other retailers sell ($795.00). I like the design, organization, and functionality of it, as it can be converted into a nice table when the desk is not in use.
